A PD Course by David Smith

Course Overview

What happens when sparkly technical unicorns find themselves as management, where spreadsheets feel no mercy and project timelines don't respect your stress levels? How many of you have seen a carefully structured meeting go completely off the rails because somebody's emotions hijacked the conversation and no one could get anything done?

Here's an uncomfortable question for you: When was the last time you made a purely rational decision as a manager? If you're being honest with yourself, that typically never happens, and that's exactly why emotional intelligence isn't just a helpful skill for managers, it's become a necessary one.

When I've coached managers all over Brisbane and throughout Australia over the years, the pattern has been consistent. Technical skills will only take you so far, as LEWIS explains, emotional intelligence is the first thing to look for in a leadership role. The successful managers out there aren't the ones who are the smartest people in the room, they're the ones who know that every workplace challenge is ultimately a human challenge.

This in-depth course recognises what most managers are dealing with everyday: not just a list of tasks and deadlines, but the complicated human beings behind them who have emotions, motivations, and triggers. When you gain the power to observe emotional responses, control your own, and help others navigate their way through tumultuous circumstances, you become a leader whom people want to follow, not someone who simply tells them to do so.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:

Recognise and regulate your own hot buttons before they interfere with decision making and group relations

Module 3: Easy Difficult Conversations parties Note: Each party get's its own unique page that corresponds with their party pack.

Practical process structures for leading tough conversations not resulting in defensiveness. You will be put into the thick of things with such real life scenarios as performance problems, conflict and giving unwelcome news without shooting yourself in the foot.

Hands on techniques to create an environment with psychological safety in which people can do their greatest work. This refers to managing team interaction, reducing anti social behaviours, and encouraging positive interactions with peers.

Course Format

This full day practical seminar combines theory with practical exercises based on real life workplace examples. You can look forward to developing the "soft" skills needed for team leadership, including scenario based role play, case study and small group work closely related to real management scenarios encountered every day.

Summary

Is emotional intelligence a soft skill, at best, and a questionably value added one at that? Think again. In today's office, the quality of your emotion recognition and management, both your own and others', increasingly determines your team's productivity, retention levels, and, ultimately, your own success.

This is a course with practical tools you can use right away for the emotional struggles every manager experiences. You will walk away with tangible tools to manage your emotions under stress, rituals to structure difficult conversations, and the building blocks of a team culture where people actually want to be accountable.

Concluding Remarks? Technical skills can help you get promoted to management, but is emotional intelligence really important for success in a management role? Quit fighting the people side of leadership, and start using the most directly applicable skill you can have as a manager.

Are you ready to experience a new way of leading? Your team is waiting for a manager who is going to grok this.
